この記事のタイトルはもともと「英会話教室で学んだこと」でしたが、僕はこの英会話教室を65日目/100日目 くらいで通うのをやめました。
「日本で英会話教室」という構造に感じた限界
英会話教室に通ったのは「無意味でした」。
僕の場合7人の大学生と1人のネイティブスピーカーでグループになって英会話をする少人数の英会話教室でしたが、あまり効果は感じられませんでした。
本気で英語を上達させるなら、短期間、毎日長時間一気に英語に触れるか、実際に日本人が一切いない環境へと留学に行く必要があるということを感じました。
またTOEICなどの試験の点数を伸ばすためなら英会話教室ではなく、自習と独学が適切だと感じました。
日本の大学の小教室でネイティブスピーカーと英会話というのは、正直「ごっこ」にすぎませんでした。
先生はとても優しく、親身になって対応してくれましたし、難易度が難しすぎたとかそういうわけではありません。
ただ、こういう形の英会話では、英語力の向上に限界があるな、と。
これは身にならないと思ったらすぐ切っていいと思う
この授業は毎日40分で1年間、100回受講する予定でしたが、１１月を境に僕は英会話教室に通うのをやめました。
1年分の会費を払っていたため、かようのをやめるのは正直ためらいました。
効果があまりないとしても、英語に毎日触れることが大切なのかも、ずっと継続していれば効果が表れるかも、とずっと悩んで仕方なく通い続けていましたが、11月になって残り4カ月を残して辞めることをやっと決意できました。
なんのために英会話教室に通うのか考えよう
なんのために英語を勉強するのか。みなさんも英会話教室に通う前によく考えてみてください。
学生であれば、資格試験で一定の点数を取る必要があるのか、とすればどの資格試験なのか、そのためにどんな勉強をしないといけないのか。
社会人であれば、実際に職場でビジネスの話ができるようになりたいのか、純粋に異国の文化に対して興味があるのか。
ただ漠然と、「将来海外に行って、たくさんの友達を作りたい」というだけでは目的があいまいすぎです。僕はとりあえず英会話教室にでも通って頑張らなきゃ、という義務感で始めましたが、目的もなく始めたのは間違いでした。
文法を伸ばしたいのか、単語を補強したいのか、リスニングを、スピーキングをできるようになりたいのか、スラングや言い回しに対応できるようになりたいのか、海外の人と違う価値観を戦わせる議論がしたいのか
自分がどうしたいのかがあれば、僕も講師さんに対してこんな授業をしてほしい、という要求ができたかもしれません。英会話教室自体が悪いのではなく、手段と目的に対する認識の甘い自分に責任がありました。講師さんはまったく悪くない。
自分であれば、留学とかではなく、就活で提示するＴＯＥＩＣの点数を上げる（例えば800点以上）という目標を立てて、そのために参考書を買ったり、金のフレーズを買ったり、過去問を解いたりするべきでした。
ＴＯＥＩＣは実際の英語力とは相関はあまりないようですから、素の英語力を伸ばすことが目的の英会話教室は、手段としてはふさわしくなかったのです。。。
まとめ
と、そんな感じで英会話教室を僕は断念しました。大学生になって、社会人になって、英語を、英会話を勉強しようと思っている人はぜひとも僕のこの悔恨の文章を読んで、僕のしかばねを踏み越えていってください。
